NOTE: these are mostly Daniel's answers as transcribed to Sarah with a few
of her opinions sprinkled in.

How would you define the music your band makes? What genre?
Are you a rock band?

Yes we are a rock band. We have a mixture of moody pop, anthemic grind,
languid dreamy drone, and some post-psychedelic no wave.

Do you feel an affiliation to the San Francisco scene of the late '60s?

Daniel fells more of an affiliation of the late 70's, early 80's S.F. scene.
Daniel grew up listening to Toiling Midgets, The Sleepers, Flipper, Crime,
Black Athletes (Athleets?), Chrome, Sick Pleasure, Bomb, Neil Young and
Santana (All S.F. or Bay Area locals.)

Do feel Brian Wilson is an influence?

Daniel Hated the Beach Boys until a few years ago.  So, no.

How important is your live show in cultivating your album sound?

Very important.  Most of the song are really worked out on stage.

How well does the sound of your album translate into a live show? And does
it matter?

Some translate better than others.  It doesn't really matter.  Sometimes
it's just like seeing two sides of the same song, the recorded version isn't
necessarily the definitive version.  A song may take on a whole new
perspective in a live atmosphere.

How long did you play as a band before you recorded your album?

The band's first album was taken directly from a live radio recording on
Portland's KBOO radio.  The band had only been together for about three
months and did not do the show with the intention of it being released.

How important do you feel the guitar is to contemporary music and is this
good or bad?

The guitar is as important as one makes it.

Which is more important sound/atmosphere or song/message?

Daniel: "That is for the listener to answer for me, it's all about what the
song wants from me.  Sometimes the song will demand all of those things (a
message, the creation of atmosphere) sometimes it just wants to fuck."

How many times a week does your band practice?

Approx. 3 hours a night, three nights a week

Do you have a day job and what is it?

Everyone tries to hold down a day job. 2 members in school as well.  Daniel
is a "vibe-ologist"

What is your definition of success?

To generate enough energy, resources, money, attention, etc.to keep doing
what it is you  HAVE to keep doing to keep yourself healthy in mind and
body.

How is portland as a city to live in for a band?

D: Cheap rent, lots of venues and places to practice, good music/record
stores, many recording studios, and lots of great bands make Portland
excellent for playing music.

How often do you tour?

Not often enough

What Portland band(s) isn't getting the attention they deserve?

Any good band that sticks to it will gain attention it's what seperates the
people who want it from the people who don't.

Do you feel there is a prejudice against bands outside the four-piece rock
band/three piece powerpop outfit, such as band like yours with more than
four?

S: The prejudice does not come as much with how many people are in a band as
much as certain genres spawn clique-ish behavior.

Is there a sound to the Portland Scene?

D: Our house has many mansions

How punk do you think you are?

punker than someone

What affiliation do you feel to the 80's Brittish invasion, Teradrop
Explodes, Joy Division, etc.?

D: we can't decide

Do you feel your music is political?

as much as inter-personal relationships can be political

Analog or digital?

yeah great

How much of an influence has the mp3 made on your band?

it makes .wav files smaller

Do you feel the traditional album will become obsolete?

D: I sense the decline of the album format--but I also sense that technology
will provide us with highly scientific devices to furhter our listening
enjoyment.

S: The term "obsolete" implies that what ever replaces the album format will
render it useless, obviously that will never happen.  We may follow trends
that lead us to digital formats and peices of music that we can only thnk of
as "conceptual art" right now.  But, if "album" means "making a musical
statement" then no, never.
