Chris
Crofton's Performance Manifesto
Say
something to the audience between songs. Include the audience. Make performance
a communal event. The community in America has been destroyed by television.
Art is honesty. Art is truth. Television is not art, television lies.
A microphone is a weapon. Use it to fight television.
Art/Music
is not meant as a tool with which to crown oneself king, abuse women,
and champion the animalistic materialism that defines American culture.
Talk between songs. Say something like, "You are not what you own!"(borrow
from Fugazi!)"Turn off your fucking T.V.," or, if that's too heavy, just
say, "Hello, how are you," maybe mention what you've been up to lately,
gossip about other bands - bring the audience into your world.
Stop
making the audience feel like the only life worth living is the "secret"
life backstage. Let them know there is no "secret" life by acting
fucking normal. Talk between songs.
Television
lies because it makes everything look polished. Everyone's clothes are
brand new and every hair is in place. Regular people look at the screen
and think their own lives are ugly and disorganized. They think they are
being entertained but they are being insulted and depressed. T.V. makes
people feel depressed and tells them to buy shit to feel better. Live
performance SHOULD NOT BE POLISHED! The songs should not be presented
like live music videos.
Wrong
rhythm for a rock show: song/song/song/song/song/song/song/song/song/"Thanks
a lot for coming out"/break/encore/"Goodnight!" FUCK UP THE RHYTHM of
a live performance - It's not T.V.!
Rock
stars today do not say anything between songs, only self serving bullshit.
They blow kisses and flash peace signs that stand for nothing. Say SOMETHING.
Silently hating corporate values does nothing. Talk about boycotting the
fucking products - Talk about turning off the fucking tube. TALK.
